![]() ...the wood talks to me. An Irish jig. Are you kidding?!? I could hear an Irish jig in my workshop. Sure enough. It was coming from a beat up maple wood plank. I started working away thinking I would get to the source of the tune. A sweet little head was forming, though it was not singing. A chip went flying from my lathe and one side of the head was gone. DANGIT!! I kept working and a smaller head took shape, a smaller body followed. No tune…But, I was looking at a fat little dog. The fat little dog kept looking back at the wood. I kept working and another head appeared along with the Irish tune! I soon met Cruinn who immediately called for his dog Madigan. Cruinn was so happy to freed from the wood. It was supposed to be a DIY project that never happened. The wood found its way to me. All Cruinn wanted was his dog, an Irish Pub, and a pint. Being that I’m not Irish, I asked him about is name, he said it means “round” and that Madigan meant “little dog”. Keeping a straight face to best of my ability (I was looking right at “round” and “little dog”), I responded with a simple nod. “Can’t give you a Pub, but I can make a hat,” I told him. He got serious for a minute and then gave me specific instructions about his hat. You see the end-result on his head and the smile on his face. Cruinn and Madigan would love to hang out with some Pub Crawlers. He doesn’t care if they are Irish or not, as long as he gets a pint. No children please, they might try to sneak a sip or pull Madigan’s tail. Cruinn and Madigan were handcrafted by me at the lathe from reclaimed maple wood. The hat is reclaimed antique pine from wood that is over 100 years old. Both characters were coated with lacquer for a beautiful shine. Cruinn and Madigan are not intended to be toys. http://www.etsy.com/listing/47926774/miniature-wooden-figures-cruinn-and ![]() Just sayin'. Hope it's a great week for y'all!

![]() She's my loyal working/playing/living partner. No matter what I'm doing, she's nearby. If I need to cuss due to failure, she listens. If I get to sing, laugh, and dance due to success, she joins me. Born on April 24th, two years ago, I hope she stays with me for a good long while. She DID chew a handmade wood earring as a pup. It was made from cherry burl, my most favorite wood in the world!! But, what could I say...at least she didn't swallow it :) It's the only time she's ever chewed on a Hendywood piece. She's my loyal partner, Bama. ![]() Today is the first time I've ever blogged. Two days ago I started a website for the first time ever...What have I gotten myself into? Oh! BTW, I'm Karen, owner of Hendywood. I'm a woodworker, specializing in jewelry and sell on Etsy. Find my work at http://hendywood.etsy.com and http://hendyshome.etsy.com. My 'real' job of teaching keeps me busy during the winter, but it's summer! Time to play! I will try to think of clever, informative, and off-topic entries as time goes by. |
